Have a fun and safe Thanksgiving!

When we think of dangerous holidays, Thanksgiving probably doesn't rank very high on the list. The explosive devices of New Years or Fourth of July probably come to mind first, but Thanksgiving has all the ingredients for a potential disaster. More people in the house, lots of cooking, and lots of eating can all signal trouble. The good news- most disasters can be averted, or at least cleaned up easily with no one the wiser.

According to the US Fire Administration, more house fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day. That's not really a surprise. Even experienced cooks can be distracted when trying to prepare too many dishes at the same time. The Oregon Red Cross has some good tips to keep your kitchen safe.

How to cook the turkey is always a hot topic around here. Last year we smoked it, and it was delicious, so we are doing the same thing this year. I like a roasted bird just fine, but this way Alann gets to deal with the hassle of the bird and I can focus on the sides. A big trend right now is to fry your turkeys. I can't even count how many different turkey fryers I've seen in the stores lately. Frying a whole bird can also be dangerous though. This site has some good tips for new and experienced fryers.

I call my dogs the clean up crew. When the kids make too big of a mess at meals or snack-time, I call in the clean up crew. They come in, eat the food, and go on their merry way. We don't feed our dogs table scraps normally, and Thanksgiving is no different. However, some people may feel their pets need to celebrate with them. The ASPCA has some good tips here to help keep your pets safe.

No matter how you celebrate, we hope you have a good time this Thanksgiving. Just in case the turkey fryer does get out of hand, our sister company Provident Development can help repair the damage, or add an addition to your home if it feels a little too cozy for all the company. Contact us for more details.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
